The Digital Intermediate (DI) process is the technique of posting film digitally, usually before outputting to 35mm film negative as a final step. The film-originated project is transferred to video or data (HD, 2K or even 4K) for editing, Visual FX, titling and color grading prior to its final output back to film.
The advantages of the Digital Intermediate process are quality, control and flexibility. Unlike film finishing in a traditional lab sense, the color, contrast and brightness of the image can be controlled separately, allowing for greater flexibility to create a desired look. Visual FX and titling can be consolidated onto one final tape or file, and there is no generational loss or additional layers of grain going straight back to film negative. In a traditional laboratory finishing process, the reproduction of film elements to produce the final theatrical release print can be visually compromising, inconvenient and creatively limiting.
New technologies have made it possible for even the most modest budgets to take advantage of this exciting, high quality process. Our team of Digital Film Specialists can help to design a package that works for both your production budget and schedule; contact us for further information.
